The song "Ritual" was chosen by Kering! as "one of the 50 worst songs of all time". Their second album and major label debut, Infestissumam, was released in 2013, peaking at number one in Sweden, and winning a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. The band released their third studio album Meliora in 2015.

Ghost is known for his eccentric stage presence. Seven of the group's eight members, known as the "Nameless Ghoul",[5] wear nearly identical, face-obscuring costumes. Before a 2017 lawsuit was filed by former band members, lead singer Tobias Forge hid his identity in a succession of characters titled "Papa Emeritus." Portrayed by Forge in a prosthetic mask and makeup, the figure is described as the "Satanic Antipope", [5] and has undergone five incarnations: I, II, III, Nihil and IV. Ghost was formed in 2006, when future bandleader Tobias Forge wrote the song "Stand By Him". He said, "I said it's probably the most heavy metal riff there's ever been... When the chorus came to me, it haunted my dreams. Every time I picked up the guitar, I finished that development, and when I fit the lyrics it seemed like it was crying out for a demonically oriented song."
